Day of the Dead, Meet Epigenetics: Healing Your Lineage in Real Time
“Every time you live your truth. You free an ancestor who was forced to hid theirs.”
On October 31st, while most people are buying last‑minute candy, planning a fun costume and fixing lopsided plastic tombstones on their lawns, I’m going to invite you to look at something a little more interesting. Many cultures, particularly Spanish speaking ones, honour what’s known as the “Day of the Dead.” This celebration invites us to remember those we have lost, but it also offers an opportunity to explore a deeper understanding of how our lineage affects us today.
I believe in the power of healing not just for us, but for our entire family lineage. Did you know that your cells are basically walking around carrying your ancestors’ unresolved stuff like tiny biochemical suitcases. You’ve probably heard, “Heal yourself, heal your lineage.” Beautiful phrase. Also… wildly misunderstood. Let’s break this down through a lens of science rather than mysticism.
Your body doesn’t just carry your own stress and stories. It carries your ancestor’s survival patterns—cellularly. First let’s look at epigenetics. Epigenetics is the study of chemical soup surrounding our genes. The soup contains memories and imprint of our ancestors. Your DNA has “switches” that can be turned on or off by experiences. Information transfers, across generations, and this information change is not only the genes, but also, the fields of energy emanating from our DNA and cells. It’s our Quantum DNA. There is a living memory in everyone. This means that through the field of our individual cells, our ancestors might be telling people how to respond to us.
When your grandmother lived through war, famine, abuse, or loss, her body adapted so she could survive. Stress and hypervigilance switch ON, and digestion switches OFF and relaxation is optional. Those switched‑on patterns can be passed on to you. Studies on Holocaust survivor’s descendants show altered stress responses even in grandchildren who never lived the original trauma. What this means is your body can act like it remembers events you never personally experienced. Fun party trick… until you’re lying awake at 2 a.m. bracing for disaster because someone didn’t text you back.
This implicates both maternal and paternal lines in the inheritance of survival patterns.
· Maternal line (mother → you)
· Paternal line (father → you)
Both men and women inherit and pass these epigenetic patterns.
Then there’s mitochondria. The little powerhouses in your cells have their own DNA, and that DNA comes only from your mother. She got it from her mother, who got it from hers, and so on, in an unbroken maternal line stretching back thousands of years. While men inherit this mitochondrial DNA, they do not pass it to their children. This distinction emphasizes the importance of women in the lineage.
Men do pass your nuclear DNA, your epigenetic patterns, your nervous system regulation (or dysregulation), and your behaviour. So no, the line doesn’t end with a son, it just travels through different channels.
So how does “healing your lineage” actually work? You are not time‑travelling to fix your grandmother’s childhood. You are changing how her trauma is expressed in your body. Her war patterns may show up in you as hypervigilance, chronic anxiety, people‑pleasing, shutdown under stress, always waiting for the other shoe to drop—despite your biggest current danger being an overflowing inbox.
When you heal, you’re essentially turning OFF some of those inherited stress switches in your cells:
· You stop unconsciously repeating their survival patterns.
· Your children (biological or not—this includes the people you influence) are less likely to inherit the same dysregulation.
· The “field” of your family system shifts. The pattern loses momentum.
This isn’t mystical. It’s practical and embodied.
How do you actually do it?
By working directly with your nervous system:
Regulate it: vagus nerve practices (humming, breathwork, cold exposure), movement, grounding. Teaching your body that safety is possible now, even if it wasn’t then. Just breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth using a sound on the outbreath, from the back hollow of the throat (in yoga they call this ocean breath) for several minutes can switch you out of fight flight freeze and into a more parasympathetic state.
Release stored trauma: feeling sensations instead of just running stories in your head, letting tears, anger, grief move through instead of stuffing them down and calling it “being fine.” Trauma resides, not just in our minds, but within our bodies. Using energy medicine techniques like rubbing out your Neurolymphatics, or doing somatic emotional release work to help release those stored tensions.
Rewire your stress responses: noticing when you go into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn—and gently choosing new responses, over and over, until your body learns a new normal. You need to train your energy patterns out old responses and choose healthier reactions. My favourite Eden Method exercise to teach my clients is called the Triple Warmer Reactivity Pose. Just place your thumbs on top of your index fingers against your temples and rest your other 3 fingers on your forehead for several minutes and breathe.
Acknowledging your lineage: You don’t need to know the specifics of your ancestor’s traumas to honour them. Simply acknowledging that you carry their patterns can be powerful. A mantra like, “I honour what my ancestors survived. I release the patterns that no longer serve me,” may provide comfort and grounding.
This work is universal, transcending gender, lineage, and background. Each of us carries patterns from our ancestors, and when we commit to healing our nervous system, we contribute to the healing of our entire lineage. This isn’t just an act of personal healing. It’s a collective legacy we can choose to alter for generations to come. That’s not pressure—it’s power.
If you want guided, practical support in doing this work—for both maternal and paternal lines—The Embodied Frequency, 2nd Edition walks you through a complete lineage clearing system using nervous system and somatic practices.
This Day of the Dead, as we connect with the memories of those who came before us, let’s acknowledge the impact of their experiences on our own lives. Together, we can heal the ancestral patterns that no longer serve us, creating a brighter path for ourselves and our descendants.
