Catch the Summer Solstice Cosmic Wave
Yang is action, light, and heat. At the Summer Solstice, the sun reaches its peak, calling us to step fully into our power and shine without hesitation."
~ Traditional Taoist Philosophy
Are you feeling a sudden urge to stay up late, socialise until your jaw hurts from laughing, and paint the town red? Don't worry, you aren't overdoing it—you are simply tuned into the ultimate celestial party.
The Summer Solstice marks the absolute peak of Yang energy on our planet. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this is the moment when nature reaches its maximum state of growth, brightness, and outward expansion. The universe is blasting its cosmic amplifier, and your personal energy field is invited to ride the wave. Let’s dive into how you can use ancient energy medicine to stoke your internal flames, expand your life, and have serious fun this season!
In TCM’s Five Elements theory, summer is ruled by the Fire Element. Fire represents warmth, high vitality, rapid transformation, and brilliant illumination. Think of it as the ultimate "glow-up" element. When your Fire element is sizzling and balanced, you feel magnetic, intensely creative, and deeply passionate about your projects. The solstice is the perfect astrological milestone to ask yourself: What parts of my life am I ready to illuminate? Where can I allow myself to take up more space and shine?
Every element aligns with an internal organ system, and for Fire, it is the Heart. In TCM, the Heart is known as the "Emperor" because it houses your Shen—which translates to your spirit, consciousness, and overall emotional radiance. The emotion of a healthy Heart and a balanced Fire element is pure, unadulterated Joy. This makes the summer solstice a wonderful excuse to prioritize activities that offer no utility other than making you smile, dance, and laugh. Laughter is literally medicine for your Heart meridian!
Yang energy moves up and out. If you have been hiding out in your winter cocoon, the solstice is your permission slip to expand outward. You can actively play with this expansive energy using basic energy medicine techniques:
The Solstice Sun Bath: Stand outside at solar noon, open your arms wide with palms facing up, and imagine the solar rays directly charging your solar plexus and heart chakras.
Expressive Movement: Shake up your stagnant Qi! Put on your favorite upbeat song and dance like nobody's watching. Let the movements be large, dramatic, and expansive to move your energy to your extremities.
While maximum Yang energy is exhilarating, too much fire causes an internal burnout. In TCM, excess fire manifests as irritability, insomnia, restlessness, or physical inflammation.
To enjoy the summer fun sustainably, you must anchor your Yang with a little bit of Yin fluid and coolness:
Eat Red and Bitter Foods: Cultivate your Heart qi with summer fruits like watermelon and strawberries, or bitter leafy greens like watercress.
Hydrate Strategically: Swap ice-cold drinks (which shock your digestive fire) for room-temperature water infused with cooling fresh mint or cucumber slices.
Dapple in the Shade: Balance your packed social calendar with moments of quiet rest under a tree to keep your Shen calm and peaceful.
The Summer Solstice is a cosmic reminder that you are a mirror of nature. Just like the trees and flowers blooming all around us, you are meant to step into the fullness of your expression right now. Let yourself be big, bold, joyful, and beautifully bright.
Happy Summer Solstice! Go out and set your soul on fire!
