The Power of Healing Hands

How becoming an Energy Medicine practitioner led me on the path to empowerment.

In my early 40s, I was a busy mother of four young children, managing a large house; all while running my demanding Interior Design practice. I was in the “fast lane” and thought I was a “superwoman” capable of being able to do it all. I believed that I had to do it all to be loved and respected by my family and peers.  I didn’t recognize that I wasn’t coping well until I started experiencing digestive problems. It took me a long time to understand how disconnected I was from my body because I was too busy focusing on everyone and everything other than myself.

Stress is a silent creeper that floods our bodies with hormonal messages. It erodes our ability to stay physically healthy, grounded, levelheaded, and calm.  I realized I was heading down a slippery slope when I noticed my hormones were constantly emotionally hijacking me.  I blamed it on PMS; a condition my doctor seemed to lack empathy for, offering only basic solutions such as avoiding sweets and alcohol and resting more when my period was near.  My cravings for sweets would go through the roof the closer I got to having my period, most likely due to being unrecognizably exhausted. Having a drink in the evening was the only thing that suppressed the emotional outbursts I was uncontrollably directing at my husband and children.  I had four small children, how was I supposed to get rest? It’s just not the Western society way.  My head is exploding just remembering how overwhelmed I was!

My husband would often bring me food thinking I had forgotten to eat, claiming that I got “hangry” (angry when I didn’t eat).  At that time it was easy to forget to feed myself as I was constantly running from one thing to the next. Feeding myself felt like a nuisance because it took too much time away from serving other people’s needs. I believed that everyone was more important than me.  My over-compassion and lack of self-respect needed an adjustment.

Eventually, I began to experience uncontrollable hot flashes, along with unexplainable pains in my stomach leading me to run to the toilet with IBS symptoms.  My hands were shaky all the time, and I would get a tight feeling in my throat which caused me problems getting to sleep at night.  As I began to drift off, I would suddenly startle awake thinking I was choking, my body would be covered in sweat and my bed would be soaked.

My doctor advised me to stop having caffeinated drinks or ingesting anything too stimulating.  She suggested I start drinking chamomile tea before bed and reading the book “7 Affective Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey”, a professional development book on how to manage family and life more efficiently as a small business owner.  Although good advice, I was having trouble reading and focusing. I was having panic attacks and extreme anxiety. My body felt like I was biting on a live electrical wire.  My insomnia got so bad that I felt like I was hallucinating and eventually it became so debilitating that it began to interfere with my ability to be able to work and properly look after my children.

My doctor began to take me seriously when I arrived at her office completely unraveled. She recommended I seek out a mental health professional and referred me to a gastroenterologist. The medication helped my digestive tract, slowing down my overstimulated emotional gut, and helping me to function better in my daily life.

My counselor helped me better understand my highly sensitive nature. After several years of suffering from all these weird physical problems, she was the first person to explain to me what a “panic attack” was.  She helped me understand the benefits of mindfulness and introduced me to complementary methods of healing.

Feeling better, I began to search for ways to reduce my medication.  Even though it had greatly helped me at a point of crisis in my life it had too many side effects. During my healing journey, I learned about perimenopause, mercury poisoning, food poisoning, food allergies, leaky gut, and the benefits of exercise motivated by doing something you love.  This is how I became a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and a professional belly dancer. I found a Naturopathic doctor who helped me implement necessary health interventions that got my health back on track.  I embraced important stress management lifestyle changes and finally, I became medication-free and an expert in my health journey.

I realized what had given me the most relief and benefit was Energy Medicine therapies like meditation, somatic bodywork, yoga, and acupuncture. As I became more in control of my emotional well-being and less anxious my interest in the field of Energy Medicine was piqued.  This mysterious form of complementary health care was intriguing, but I needed to understand a lot more about the sciences behind it before I was willing to jump into a full-time career serving people using it.

Despite my critically-minded family’s skepticism, after attending a large healing conference in Vancouver, I decided to learn to Remote View.  Dr. David Morehouse, a well-known retired US military Remote Viewer, and a presenter at this conference, showed studies that supported scientific credibility. I hoped that learning to Remote View could help me convince my family and friends that what had helped me was valuable. Through this training, I learned about quantum science and the capabilities of the human mind. It gave me insight into the research behind what many of us in the Western world view as superhuman abilities, and that we have innate abilities to see, hear, feel, touch, sense, and be greatly affected by all forms of ENERGY.  It explained all the anomalous and magical experiences I had witnessed throughout my life and opened my mind to how we are conditioned to think and believe in certain ways that may not always be supportive of our health and well-being.  It gave me a much better understanding of who and what we truly are.  Everything in the universe is composed of energy, and when we learn how to tap into universal life force energy, we can access a profound source of healing potential.  My highly sensitive side was finally being validated and the world of energy healing became a tested, tried, and true passion of mine.

Convinced that extra sensory abilities exist in all of us and can be trained, I was ready to embrace the Eden Method Certified Practitioner program. I knew it was going to give me a dependable way to work with others. It was Donna Eden’s healing journey, that led to her creating this rich program that dives deep into Eastern healing philosophies and practices, ones that have been well-documented and studied for thousands of years. Her teachings merge principles of ancient traditions, showing us how our energy systems operate within our bodies.  My academic habituation drove me to delve deeper into our Western understanding of energy healing, and I found several scientific fields and theories that support the understanding of the potential mechanisms that underly energy-based healing practices.

Energy Medicine involves the concept of humans having a biofield - an electromagnetic field or energy matrix that surrounds and permeates the body. Research in Biophysics indicates that all living organisms emit electromagnetic fields that can be detected and measured. This field of science explores Bioelectromagnetism, which examines the electrical and magnetic fields that living organisms radiate. This research provides a solid basis for understanding how energy-based practices may influence physiological processes.  It’s understood scientifically that the human body generates electrical currents through various physiological processes. For example, nerve cells communicate through electrical impulses, and muscles contract in response to electrical signals. This electrical activity can be measured using techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) which are used daily by our medical professionals.
Energy Medicine practitioners believe that disturbances or imbalances in these currents can contribute to health problems and that interventions aimed at rebalancing these energies can promote self-healing. We also believe that disorders in the biofield can manifest as physical or emotional symptoms. Through well-documented Eastern doctrines, Eden Energy Medicine practitioners use techniques, that manipulate the biofield, to help restore balance and promote well-being.

Bioelectromagnetic principles also underlie concepts such as coherence, resonance, and entrainment, which describe how electromagnetic fields can interact with and influence each other. Energy Medicine practitioners use techniques such as sound therapy or vibrational medicine to apply specific frequencies or vibrations to the body, to entrain the body's electromagnetic field into a state of balance and harmony. We believe it is possible to influence cellular function, and nervous system activity, towards overall health.  Similarly, it's not uncommon for physical therapists, chiropractors, orthopedic surgeons, and doctors to use devices that generate electromagnetic fields, such as pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) devices or bio-resonance machines. Studies have shown that these devices can have a therapeutic effect by regulating cellular processes, promoting tissue repair, and reducing inflammation. PEMF therapy is seen as a modality that supports this natural healing process by providing the body with the energy and resources it needs to repair and regenerate tissues. Similar to Energy Medicine principles, these approaches emphasize the body's innate ability to heal itself.

Quantum physics suggests that everything, including matter, is made up of energy fields or vibrations at the quantum level. It introduces the concept of non-locality, which implies that particles can be interconnected regardless of distance. Energy Medicine operates on the assumption that energy can be transferred or influenced across distances without direct physical contact, such as in distant healing practices. In quantum physics, the act of observation can affect the behaviour of particles. Energy Medicine practitioners believe using our intention and focus can influence the energetic processes and outcomes of healing. Quantum coherence refers to the alignment of wave phases, resulting in enhanced energy transfer and efficiency. Energy Medicine techniques seek to restore coherence and balance within the body's energy systems to promote healing and well-being.

Neuroscience investigates the brain and nervous system's functions and how they relate to behaviour and health. Meditation, a practice often incorporated into Energy Medicine modalities, has been shown to affect brain activity, stress responses, improved immune function, pain relief, and emotional well-being. Research suggests that these practices have measurable effects on brain structure and function.

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) explores the interactions between the mind, nervous system, and immune system, and how psychological factors can influence health. Studies in PNI have demonstrated the impact of stress, emotions, and belief systems on immune function and overall health. Energy Medicine approaches emphasize the mind-body connection that supports stress reduction and improved emotional well-being, understanding that this can positively influence our immune function.

Working with subtle energies requires practitioners to cultivate heightened levels of intuition and sensitivity. We learn to channel and direct subtle energy to facilitate healing on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.  As deepened my connection with universal energy, I became more attuned to the subtle cues and signals of my clients and their energy fields, elevating my kinesthetic senses and incorporating the science of Mirror Neurons. I tune into and recognize the energetic and physical imbalances that are going on with my clients when I lay my hands on them.  Learning to heighten your awareness enhances your ability and effectiveness as a healer. Learning to become more intuitive has also greatly enriched my personal life, and given me self-confidence, clarity, and great respect for mindfulness.

In a world where stress, anxiety, and chronic ailments permeate every corner of society, the role of an Energy Medicine practitioner is emerging as a beacon of hope and healing. We understand that imbalances in one aspect of the self can manifest as physical or emotional symptoms. By addressing these imbalances at the energetic level, we can help clients achieve greater harmony and balance within themselves, leading to improved overall well-being. Energy Medicine embraces a holistic approach to wellness that encompasses the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of health. Practitioners recognize that true healing occurs when all aspects of the self are in balance. By addressing the root cause of an illness and disharmony at the energetic level, practitioners support holistic healing and transformation.

The most inspiring and fulfilling aspect of being an Eden Energy Medicine practitioner is the ability to empower others on their healing journey.  We serve as facilitators, helping individuals tap into their innate healing abilities.  We offer support, guidance, and energetic assistance showing clients how to take an active role in their healing process.  We make a meaningful impression in the lives of others. Whether facilitating physical healing, emotional release, or spiritual growth, we get to witness the transformative power of working with our energy systems firsthand.
